Some improvement will be apparent even on the old "postage stamp" screens in theaters where not one cent has been spent to improve the presentation. DRIVE-IN PRESENTATION OF VISTAVISION FILMS. All re-recording will be to a single-sound-track magnetic master which will have been re-recorded (dubbed) with monaural monitoring. Find the perfect vistavision and technicolor stock photo, image, vector, illustration or 360 image. For the aborted early 1930s color process, instead of an image four perforations high, the camera exposed eight perforations (essentially two frames) consisting of one 4-perf image through a red filter and one 4-perf image through a green filter. One reason for this is that the company was using a two color system in their cameras which only produced one strip of negatives. Dark Knight trilogy. Paramount has four of these cameras which have been used as an expedient in the shooting of WHITE CHRISTMAS, THREE RING CIRCUS, STRATEGIC AIR COMMAND and subsequent pictures until other cameras are available. In the preceding paragraphs we have named specific aspect ratios. Thus the variable prismatic expander lens provides complete flexibility in the projection booth for the exhibition of any print. A retooled VistaVision camera dubbed the Dykstraflex (named for special effects master John Dykstra) was used by the group (later called Industrial Light & Magic) in complex process shots. In CinemaScope projection, the image passes through an anamorphic expander lens which expands the image in the ratio of 2/1. This gave the former a sharper image with less photographic grain. Upload images to make storyboards and slideshows. [4], Also offered at the same auction was VistaVision High Speed #1 (VVHS1), which was used to film the parting of the Red Sea in The Ten Commandments (1956) and special effects on Star Wars (winning bid US$60,000.)[5]. If the picture is being projected in the old 1.33/1 aspect ratio, the projectionist will frame with the top frame line just above the top of the projected picture as in the past. The steps of the VistaVision process are explained in the following paragraphs under: 4. Three types of anamorphic expander lenses are now being manufactured. 4K UHD Blu-ray review of Cecil B. It is the feature that others must follow if they are to reduce grain, eliminate fuzziness and gain bigger, brighter and better pictures. Many of these off-brand VistaVision films included classics of Japanese cinema, such as Death by Hanging (1968), In the Realm of the Senses (1976), and Vengeance is Mine (1979). A visual medium requires visual methods. There is also another "rule of thumb" method for determining best screen width-namely, "the best screen width should not be more than 1/3 the distance from the screen to the center of seating, and the screen width should not be less than 1/6 the distance from the screen to the back of the auditorium. Every theater should install the largest possible screen, both in respect to height and width. But although many knew about the changes, few had seen them all put together in a single picture. If the screen carries black masking, the projected picture image should overlap the masking far enough to give a well framed picture. This was well before the shooting of the first CinemaScope picture, and well before the theaters were equipped with 2/1 expander lenses. However, the theaters should vary from these defined ratios as required to fill the screen. Figure 2) at the start of each 2,000 foot reel as a guide to the projectionist. In the squeezed print it will be oval as shown in Figure 3. If Technicolor was going to move forward, it was clear it needed a new system. The area of negative film exposure is shown in Figure 1. Much of VistaVision's image quality must be credited to the Technicolor imbibition (dye transfer) printing process. The light level used on interior sets is between 350 and 600 foot-candles, with most shots running between 400 and 500 foot-candles. While most competing widescreen film systems used magnetic audio and true stereophonic sound, early VistaVision carried only Perspecta Stereo, encoded in the optical track. were episodes about Honda and Subway actually sponsored Everything Everywhere All At Once Takes Best Picture At Official Poster for 'INSIDE' Starring Willem Dafoe. In any case, the point about the film benefitting from being in "Technicolor" rather than "Warnercolor" is a valid one, but it was shot on a single strip negative, not 3-strip like the classic Technicolor process . Well, it takes a bit of explaining, so if you can, please join us as we look into the origins of VistaVision, what it was like, and why it still matters today. A screen of this type will give much better viewing to the important and largest number of seats, and it will provide satisfactory light distribution throughout the theater. This reaches beyond the back wall in most theaters. All scoring will be single sound track magnetic with as much reverberant bigness as can be obtained. Submissions should be for the purpose of informing or initiating a discussion, not just to entertain readers. As an example, with a screen 25 feet wide, this has been from 50 to 125 feet from the screen. No more VistaVision in use today, at least not for film. In the opinion of the writer the optics for a 1 1/2/1 ratio will give better picture quality than a higher ratio. Paramount will have no magnetic sound release. Paramount will conduct a series of tests in Drive-lns using the following outlined procedure which we feel will be helpful for Drive-ln presentation. Whatever it is, this much remains certain: cinema wouldnt be what it is today without Technicolor. For large houses we recommend purchasing a metallized seamless screen that has a light gain of two and one-half to one. By the early 1930s, Technicolor developed a brand-new camera, which utilized a three-color system (otherwise known as three strip Technicolor) rather than a two-color system. Tests indicate that as we increase the size of the negative, we improve picture resolution in the plane of focus and grain size reduction, but beyond a certain point we tend to lose depth of field. VistaVision allowed patrons to see more and therefore gain more enjoyment out of a feature. De Mille's 'The Ten Commandments' (1956). Create robust and customizable shot lists. It seems to the writer that Drive-lns can best be served by using a screen in the ratio of 2/1 and using the VistaVision squeezed prints along with variable prismatic expander lenses working at the expansion ratio of 1 1/2/1 as established for the VistaVision Prints. Unlike most other types of filmmaking, the VistaVision camera process involves turning the film stock on its side, so that the perforations are at the top and bottom of the image (instead of on the left and right). In our work with stereophonic sound we have found that it is overbearing and gives too much effect of movement for front seat listening, and it is of little value in the rear of the theater. Now that you know more about VistaVision, learn about IMAX, how it came to be, and how it revolutionized cinema. One of the objectives of VistaVision is to FILL THE SCREEN. This includes lenses down to 24 mm, which will give a photographic angle of coverage slightly above 75 degrees. This applies to both straight and anamorphic projection of all previous pictures. Using that larger-area negative really improves the final product. On future pictures it is contemplated that all sound editing will be with striped magnetic 35mm film and the magnetic cutting print will be used as the re-recording print. Rafael Abreu received his B.A. The only prints made from VistaVision negatives that were the full 1.33:1 aperture were made for television rather than theatrical presentation.MBH. Master the art of visual storytelling with our FREE video series on directing and filmmaking techniques. It plays best in ratios close to 1.85/1. What is VistaVision? VistaVision cameras were sometimes adapted. But then CinemaScope from 20th Century Fox changed the landscape with widescreen imagery to get people into theaters nationwide. The finders on the VistaVision cameras carry a hairline framing marking in the aspect ratio of 1.66/1. Your email address will not be published. In theaters where the screen width is limited to under 30 feet, and where there is adequate height, we recommend a screen aspect ratio of 1 66/1, reducing the height only when necessary for good viewing. I can tell when a film is 3 strip cos the colors basically bleed off the screen and are super saturated, while Eastman color, while pretty colorful in its own right is more natural looking. It is the writer's opinion, however, that we are gaining an adequate angle of coverage. There is a great deal of confusion between aspect ratios, and squeezed and/or expansion ratios. We have now arrived at a turning point where the product has been markedly improved, and if the theaters are to gain the advantage of this improvement they must have good equipment. Less expensive anamorphic systems such as CinemaScope and the more expensive 70mm format became standard during the later 1950s and 1960s. The resulting Technirama frame was very similar to VistaVision except that Technirama ever so slightly lowered the top of the aperture to create an aspect ratio of 2.35:1 and this left room for an optical soundtrack when printed directly to 35mm . As soon as the Chrtien lens was again considered for industry use, Paramount went on record with the Motion Picture Research Council and the studios of the industry in a letter written by the writer on February 11, 1953, recommending that if anamorphic lenses were to be used, they should be used in a compression and/or expansion ratio of 1 1/2 (not 2/1) so as to give a picture aspect ratio of 2/1 on the screen. VistaVision is a flexible system and allows adequate latitude for filling the screen. Complete camera specifications on a proposed new camera were mailed last October to all camera manufacturers. Much has been said both for and against the practice of gaining proper picture shape by diminishing the opening in the projector aperture plates. He reflects on what it was like to work with the company on films like Apocalypse Nowand their instrumental aid in the restoration of his film The Cotton Club: So, what is Technicolor? Hollywood made so much use of Technicolor in 1929 and 1930 that many believed the feature film industry would soon be turning out color films exclusively. In addition to the movies not having the distortion of anamorphic, VistaVision provided an option for filmmakers and theaters that wanted a widescreen experience that didnt sacrifice height or width and could be easily presented nationwide. The most important feature of VistaVision is the large negative and its optical reduction to the standard print. The film is standard 35 mm negative exposed horizontally. VistaVision standard prints can be projected in any theater in the world with an improvement in picture quality. They are the cylindrical lens type, such as used by CinemaScope, the reflector lens type, as manufactured by the Old Delft Company in Holland, and the prismatic type, which is now being manufactured by the Tushinsky Brothers, and others. An additive prism beam-splitter was used to expose one red and one green filtered image onto a single strip of film. efore the 1950s, nearly every single movie was in the same 4:3 aspect ratio. In addition to gaining about 40% in light on the 2/1 picture, this squeezed print has the possibility of having slightly better color saturation and possibly (still to be proved) slightly better picture definition for large screen projection. This is a tremendous advantage. We make no specific recommendations in regard to projector type or projector lamp houses, except that in our experience with shorter focal length lenses, better screen illumination is obtained with lamp houses of the reflector type having mirrors 16 inches in diameter. Press question mark to learn the rest of the keyboard shortcuts. Paramount has no interest directly or indirectly in the collection of royalties or in the manufacturing profits that may come from any of the products that may be used by this system. The aesthetic of technicolor is one of the most revered in cinema history. VistaVision could be (and most often was) further printed down to standard vertical 35 mm reels keeping its 1.66:1 widescreen aspect ratio, which meant exhibitors did not need to purchase additional projection equipment, unlike CinemaScope. Below are more "Lazy 8" production stills. A compressed print is shown in Figure 3. Available for both RF and RM licensing. When desired, squeezed prints are made during the process of optical printing, but in the case of VistaVision the squeeze ratio is 1 1/2/1. Shortly thereafter, it was announced that all of the studio's productions would be shot in this ratio. I saw a new print of THE SEARCHERS back in about 1998, and it was stunningly clear, even though it was just a standard 35mm 1.85 print. In addition to gaining flexibility in projection, the compressed VistaVision prints, working with expander lenses will give a light increase of approximately 40% which can be of real assistance on very large screens. slightly less depth of field than vertical pulldown 35mm. By 1950, there were more than a few competitors carving out Technicolors market share. If a circle is photographed it will appear on the negative as shown in Figure 1. The center of seating in most balcony theaters is about 3/4 the distance from the screen to the back row of seats". The procedure is called "cropping". This is the same light level that has been in use at Paramount studio for nearly a year. As stated above, all VistaVision release prints, both standard and squeezed, will have a single photographic sound track located in the standard position so that they will reproduce on any standard optical sound head in any projector the world over. Technicolor envisioned a full-color process as early as 1924, and was actively developing such a process by 1929. The VistaVision cameras will be used for all future Paramount black and white pictures as well as color pictures. It took a long time for Technicolor to settle on the best process for getting the full spectrum of color in its pictures. In considering cropping, most people think of a possible quality loss from the cropped print. The position of Paramount has never changed, and with VistaVision, Paramount is making available release prints which have been compressed in the ratio of 1 1/2/1 for projection through a variable prismatic expander lens set at the expansion ratio of 1 1/2 to give a screen aspect ratio of 2/1. Films were starting to be shot in widescreen through processes like Cinemascope and VistaVision. But the process used to colorize the picture, the Douglass natural color process, was incredibly hard to pull off. A few 8-perf titles have been preserved on 65mm film, but most have been preserved on 35mm film or are considered[by whom?] This scene is squeezed horizontally in the squeeze ratio of 2/1 which gives a negative image in the aspect ratio of 1.33/1. The VistaVision squeezed prints will not play through the CinemaScope 2/1 expander lenses. In this regard it should be pointed out that Paramount has never taken a position against the use of anamorphic lenses, but Paramount has taken the position that its pictures should be projected in an aspect ratio not exceeding 2/1 for the best presentation. VistaVision could be (and most often was) further printed down to standard vertical 35mm reels keeping its 1.66:1 widescreen aspect ratio, which meant exhibitors did not need to purchase additional projection equipment, unlike CinemaScope. Although we have probably not tested all of the different types, most of these lenses give poor results. All domestic and possibly the foreign release prints are to be made by a new imbibition dye transfer method which Technicolor has developed and which is being introduced along with the release of WHITE CHRISTMAS. Most of the dye-transfer plants throughout the world have been shut down. At the time, this was viewed as a quantum leap forward for cinema. The present experience indicates that stereophonic sound is of questionable value in the smaller theaters. 118 related topics. Cameras used 35-mm film running horizontally with an 8-perforation frame, double the normal size, exactly the same as VistaVision. What is Technicolor? In very wide theaters and very large theaters, the addition of auditorium speakers at D and E may improve the sound effectiveness. Some studios sought to compensate for this by shooting its color pictures with a full aperture gate (rather than the academy aperture), and then reducing the image in Technicolor's optical printer. It was Paramount's decision then, as it is today, that the 2.66/1 aspect ratio is too wide for its height. Paramount wishes to encourage others in the use of VistaVision cameras and will supply copies of the new specifications to any person or company having a bona fide interest in camera design. The projectionist racked their framing so that the staff touched the top of the screen (at the appropriate ratio) and the framing was set for the rest of the reel. At this time we wish to point out that Perspect-a-sound is being made available as a part of the flexibility of the VistaVision system, but its use is optional with the exhibitor and no demand for its use will be made by Paramount. Paramount never used anamorphic processes such as 2.55: 1, CinemaScope but refined the quality of its flat widescreen system by orienting the 35mm negative horizontally in the camera gate and shooting onto a big area, which yielded the finer-grained projection print. This is the same light level that has been in use at Paramount studio for nearly a year. Looking back, its pretty remarkable that this system worked at all. Paramount took this concept a step further, using old Stein cameras from the 1930s which used a two-frame color format that was itself adopted from a 1902 three-frame color film process developed by Edward Raymond Turner. Screen height, the same as screen width, is usually limited by the proscenium. A two-color process that used dye imbibition to chemically color two complementary images onto a single strip of film. Perhaps its nostalgia, perhaps it's the colors, perhaps its the films themselves. Technically, the VistaVision cameras will still work, but getting the optical work done would be problematic though there are digital scanners that can scan 8-perf 35mm, no problem. The negative will be handled in 2,000-foot rolls corresponding to the 1,000-foot rolls of normal film. As finer-grained film stocks appeared on the market, VistaVision became obsolete. There is a tendency on the part of theater men to select a metallized screen that has a uniform distribution across the house. A print made from this negative is still squeezed. VistaVision did not cut down the number of seats in any theater (as did. These auditorium loudspeakers, if used, should be located well to the front of the auditorium. Technirama used 1.5:1 anamorphic curved mirror optics in front of the camera lens (unlike CinemaScope's cylindrical lenses which squeezed the image in a 1:2 ratio). This gave the former a sharper image with less photographic grain. Your email address will not be published. As a further recommendation in this regard, it is our belief that in the very large theaters they should install screens capable of accepting the aspect ratio of 1.85/1, unless the sight line for seats at the back of the main floor is limited by a low hanging balcony. Larger screens and larger pictures, such as the old Magnascope, have always been possible. The only place we would use such a lens would be where the projection throw is very short, requiring a lens having a focal length under 21/4 inches. ; ; ; ; ; ; ; In this next video, well see how Technicolor used processes 1-3 to achieve revolutionary, but painstaking results: Its amazing how many films from this era have been lost to time. Technicolor mated these squeeze adapters to 3-strip cameras that had been converted to VistaVision. We are not prepared to make a definite recommendation at this time. When Paramount introduced the large screen to the motion picture industry prior to and during the release of SHANE, Paramount recommended that the theaters install the largest feasible screen, both as to HEIGHT and WIDTH. The quality would have been very good but perhaps a bit less than those processes, because the negative was not quite as large and needed to be printed optically. If the picture is being projected in the aspect ratio of 1.85/1, the projectionist will frame on the dashed line, and if the picture is to be projected in the aspect ratio of 2/1, framing should be on the little dot below the dashed line. The previous width for the old pictures would be 25 feet. (See Figure 2 for size of print image.) I am now in Motion Picture | High-Fidelity, myself. Our desire is to gain the best picture quality, and as long as cropping gives the best picture quality, we recommend cropping . vistavision vs technicolor. Resulting in higher-resolution photography, along with a native widescreen VistaVision aspect ratio of about 1.5:1 that can, by design, be cropped for 1.66:1, 1.85:1, and 2:1. A very similar idea is used for Imax, though, and that's still in (very limited) use. 2It was not possible to project VistaVision prints with an aspect ratio of 1.33:1 as illustrated. Since VistaVision was no longer a major format, Paramount sold off many of their cameras to international filmmakers, who used the process infrequently throughout the rest of the decade. The light level used on interior sets is between 350 and 600 foot-candles, with most shots running between 400 and 500 foot-candles. This process utilized a screen size that yielded an aspect ratio of 5 units wide by 3 units high, or 1.66:1. In this case the Drive-lns should gain in screen illumination and also gain slightly by the larger projected images of the players. However, VistaVision's high resolution made it attractive for some special effects work within some later feature films. Seen at left is one of the two Stein "Fox Color" cameras that Paramount engineers adapted for the horizontal 8-perforation film format. For the exhibitors who wish complete flexibility in picture projection, Paramount suggests the purchase of variable prismatic expander lenses such as those manufactured by the Tushinsky Brothers under the trade name of "Superscope" lenses. Walt Disney Productions used the process twice for full-length animated features: Sleeping Beauty (1959), and The Black Cauldron (1985). After the release of The Wizard of Oz, studios around the world rushed to get their hands on Technicolor. Many VistaVision cameras were sold off internationally beginning in the early 1960s, which led to a significant number of VistaVision format productions (which did not use the trade name) in countries such as Italy and Japan from the 1960s to 1980s. Paramount makes no demand on any theater, but there is one thing on which there is complete agreement among all studios and all exhibitors, big screens are here to stay. The picture negative is Eastman Mazda color taking stock. A loss does occur on the 2.55/1 anamorphic pictures when the aspect ratio is reduced by side cropping, and some loss does occur when pictures made from standard negatives are cropped. Were going to look at some examples of Technicolor in films like The Wizard of Oz and The Godfather but, first, lets check out a quick video to see where it started. More recently, certain key sequences of the film Inception were shot in VistaVision, and in the film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, shots that needed to be optically enlarged were shot in VistaVision. By the early 21st century, computer-generated imagery, advanced film scanning, digital intermediate methods and film stocks with higher resolutions optimized for special effects work had together rendered VistaVision mostly obsolete even for special effects work. As another example, if a screen 50 feet wide is installed in a theater 100 feet deep, the screen will be too wide and viewing will be uncomfortable unless seats are moved back to at least 25 feet and preferably 38 feet from the screen. If Eastman release prints are required by the Foreign Department, we feel sure that the VistaVision double-frame negative will give a better inter-negative for such release printing than could be obtained by any other system. With VistaVision on a screen 50 feet wide, the seating will be acceptable down to 25 feet from the screen and will be very satisfactory at 38 feet from the screen. As an Amazon Associate, we may earn commissionsfrom qualifying purchases from Amazon.com. A two-color process that used subtractive complementary colors onto a single strip of film. This required special equipment that most theaters were not going to house, especially since it was impractical and prone to problems. For more than two decades after this, VistaVision was often used as an originating and intermediate format for shooting special effects since a larger negative area compensates against the increased grain created when shots are optically composited. The Wizard of Oz doesnt start in color though. For VistaVision directional sound it is only necessary to have three loudspeakers, as shown by A, B, and C, Figure 4. Numerous reports say that throughout filming, the sound stage was hotter than 100F.
